You can study for Functional Skills Level 2 from home, sit the exam from home, and never set foot in a classroom or test centre. The whole qualification is delivered online. If you work full time, have caring responsibilities, live in a rural area, or just hate commuting, this is the route designed for you.
Yes – studying is fully online
Both Functify Learning courses are 100% online. Choose the format that suits you:
5-Day Revision Course (£19.99 per subject): Pre-recorded video lessons you watch on any device, anytime. Self-paced. No live classes – watch them on your phone on the bus, on your laptop at home, or on the TV in the evening. Total content is around 5-10 hours.
10-Week Online Course (£197 per subject): Live online lessons via Zoom with an expert tutor, plus weekly practice and full tutor support. Choose:
- Saturday morning – 10-11am Maths, 11am-12pm English (designed for working adults)
- Thursday lunchtime – 12-1pm Maths, 1-2pm English (good for those who can dip out at work)
Every session is recorded so if you miss one, you watch it back. No commute, no parking, no awkwardly leaving work early.
Yes – the exam is also sat from home
This is the part that genuinely surprises most people. Highfield – our exam board – delivers all Functional Skills Level 2 exams via remote invigilation. You sit at your own desk, with a webcam pointed at you, and an invigilator watches you through the exam.
What you need:
- A laptop or desktop (no tablets or phones)
- A working webcam and microphone
- Stable internet (minimum 5Mbps)
- A quiet room with no other people in it
- Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
- Pen and paper for working out
- A calculator (Maths exam only – in the calculator section)
What you do not need:
- To travel to a test centre
- To take a day off work
- To find childcare
- To wait for the May/June exam window
How the at-home exam actually works
Step by step:
- You book your exam online for any available slot
- Highfield emails you a joining link 24 hours before
- 15 minutes before your exam, you log in
- The invigilator checks your photo ID via webcam
- You scan your room with the webcam to show there is no one else there and no notes on the walls
- The invigilator unlocks the exam
- You sit it – 1 hour for English Reading, 1 hour for English Writing, 2 hours for Maths
- The invigilator stays on the call (muted) throughout
- Submit when you finish
- Results come by email in 5-10 working days
Study from home, exam from home
Whole qualification done without leaving the house. From £19.99 with Klarna.
Who this works particularly well for
Working adults. Saturday morning live courses mean you do not have to choose between this qualification and your job.
Parents. Self-paced video study fits around school runs, naps and bedtimes. Live Saturday classes happen while children are eating breakfast.
Carers. No need to arrange care so you can attend a class.
People in rural areas. No travel to the nearest college, which might be an hour away.
People with anxiety or chronic illness. Studying and sitting the exam in a familiar environment removes a huge amount of stress.
Apprentices. No need to take time off your apprenticeship – study evenings and weekends.
Anyone who hates classrooms. Self-explanatory. Some adults had a rough time at school. The home-study route avoids that entirely.
What about the Speaking and Listening component for English?
This is the one part where you might think “surely you cannot do that from home”. You can. As an Approved Highfield Centre, Functify Learning assesses your Speaking and Listening either via:
- A recorded presentation you submit (no live audience needed)
- A live online discussion via Zoom with your tutor
You choose which format you prefer when the time comes. The component is internally assessed by your Functify tutor and externally moderated by Highfield.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really not need to go anywhere?
Correct. Course delivery is fully online. Exam is sat from home via webcam-monitored remote invigilation. Speaking and Listening (English only) is done via Zoom or a recorded video. No physical attendance is required at any stage.
What if my internet is unreliable?
You need a minimum of 5Mbps for the exam. If your home connection is patchy, sit it from a friend or family member’s house with better internet, or use a mobile hotspot. The course videos work on slower connections.
Can I sit the exam in a different country?
Yes – Highfield’s remote invigilation works internationally. Many of our learners are UK citizens living abroad who need a recognised UK qualification.
Is the at-home exam easier than at a test centre?
Same exam, same standard, same pass mark. The only difference is comfort – which can actually help you perform better.
What about ESOL learners?
Functional Skills Level 2 is not an ESOL qualification – it assumes English competence. If English is very new to you, start with ESOL Entry levels first. Once you can hold a conversation in English comfortably, Functional Skills Level 2 is appropriate.
Can I pay with Klarna?
Yes. All Functify courses, including the Complete Package at £450, are available with Klarna at checkout. Spread the cost over 3 or 4 interest-free payments.
The bottom line
