What is Functional Skills Level 2 Maths?
Functional Skills Level 2 Maths is a GCSE-equivalent maths qualification, regulated by Ofqual and recognised by universities, employers, apprenticeship providers and the NHS. A Level 2 pass is accepted wherever a GCSE grade 4 (C) is required.

What is on the Functional Skills Level 2 Maths exam?
The exam is 2 hours and split into two sections, sat online with Highfield from the comfort of your home:
Section A – Non-calculator (25% of marks): Tests mental arithmetic, estimation and basic number skills. Short focused questions on percentages, ratio, time, and simple calculations.
Section B – Calculator (75% of marks): Longer applied problems in real-world contexts. You will work through scenarios like planning a holiday budget, interpreting a bill, calculating interest, working out discount percentages, or reading charts and graphs.
Content areas tested:
- Number – percentages, ratios, fractions, decimals, rounding
- Measures, Shape and Space – area, perimeter, volume, units, time, money
- Data Handling – mean, median, mode, range, charts, graphs, probability
Pass mark is typically around 40-50% but is set by Highfield each session. Results are issued within a few working days.
How long does Functional Skills Level 2 Maths take?
Significantly less time than a college course. If you are confident with the basics and just need structured revision, the 5-Day Course can get you exam-ready inside a week. If maths has not been your strongest subject and you want to build confidence properly, the 10-Week Course gives you a full term of guided practice – but still a fraction of the nine to twelve months a college resit takes.
