How Long Does Functional Skills Level 2 Take to Complete?

The fastest route to a Functional Skills Level 2 pass is around two weeks. The most thorough route is around 12 weeks. Both are dramatically faster than the academic year you would lose to a college GCSE resit. This guide gives you realistic timelines for each route – and how to decide which one fits your life.

The fastest possible timeline (under 2 weeks)

If you already understand Maths or English at GCSE level and just need the qualification on paper, here is the absolute fastest route:

  • Day 1: Enrol on the 5-Day Revision Course (£19.99 per subject)
  • Days 1-3: Watch all the revision videos (5-10 hours of content)
  • Day 4: Sit a £35 mock test
  • Days 5-7: Drill any weak areas the mock revealed
  • Day 8 onwards: Book your real exam (the earliest possible date is 5 days from enrolment)
  • Day 10-14: Sit the exam from home with Highfield
  • 2-3 weeks after that: Receive your certificate

Total: enrolment to certificate in around 4-5 weeks, with active study time of around 15 hours.

The 10-week route (recommended for most learners)

If Maths or English needs proper rebuilding rather than just exam prep, the 10-Week Course gives you a structured route with live tutor support. Timeline:

  • Weeks 1-10: Live online lessons (1 hour per week, Saturday morning or Thursday lunchtime) plus 2-3 hours of weekly practice
  • Week 9: Marked mock exam with feedback
  • Week 10-11: Final revision based on mock feedback
  • Week 11-12: Sit the real exam
  • 2-3 weeks after that: Certificate arrives

Total: enrolment to certificate in around 14 weeks (just over three months).

Compared to a college GCSE resit

Route Time to certificate Where you study Cost
Functify 5-Day 2-5 weeks Online, anytime £19.99 + exam
Functify 10-Week 12-14 weeks Online live (Sat or Thu) £197 + exam
College GCSE resit A full academic year (9-12 months) Classroom, weekday daytime £200-£600 per subject

The college route is between 6 and 30 times longer. For apprentices facing end-point assessment, working adults applying for promotion, or anyone needing this qualification before a job application deadline, that difference is decisive.

How long should I actually allocate?

Be honest with yourself about your starting point. Three rough categories:

“I am pretty confident, just need the certificate”
Allocate 2-3 weeks. Enrol on the 5-Day Course, do a mock, book the exam.

“I have not done Maths/English in years and I am rusty”
Allocate 6-8 weeks. Either the 5-Day Course taken slowly with practice in between, or the first half of the 10-Week Course followed by exam booking.

“I have failed GCSE before and I lost confidence”
Allocate 12-14 weeks with the full 10-Week Course. Building proper foundations is worth doing properly. Many of our 92% first-time passers are people who failed GCSE – the difference is the format and the time spent on what examiners actually want.

What slows people down

Three things consistently make Functional Skills take longer than it needs to:

Not booking the exam. “I will book it when I feel ready” turns into months of procrastination. Book early. The deadline forces focus.

Skipping the mock test. Going into the real exam blind is a gamble. The £35 mock tells you exactly where you stand and saves you from a wasted exam booking.

Trying to learn everything. The Functional Skills syllabus is broad. The exam tests a specific subset of it. Train on the exam, not the syllabus.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really finish in 2 weeks?

Yes – if you have the basics already. Our 5-Day Course is around 5-10 hours of content. The Highfield rule requires a 5-day gap between enrolment and exam booking, so 2 weeks is the realistic minimum.

Do both Maths and English take the same time?

Roughly, yes. English has three components (Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening) so it has slightly more to prepare. Maths is one exam in two sections. Most learners take both together with the Complete Package.

Can I do both subjects at once?

Yes – and most learners do. The Complete Package at £450 covers everything (10-week courses, 5-day revision, both exams) and you can study both subjects in parallel. Klarna spreads the cost.

How long does it take to get my certificate after passing?

5-10 working days for results to come through, then 2-3 weeks for the physical certificate from Highfield to arrive in the post.

What if I need it by a specific date?

Tell us what date you need it by and we will help you choose the right course. WhatsApp us on 07572 923116. The 5-Day Course can have you certified in around 4-5 weeks from enrolment.

The bottom line

Functional Skills Level 2 is fast – significantly faster than a college GCSE resit. The actual time depends on where you are starting from and which course you choose, but for most learners it is somewhere between 2 weeks and 4 months. Compare that to 9-12 months in a classroom, and the choice becomes obvious.
