Functional Skills Level 2 English mock test: what your result actually tells you

A mock test is the cheapest way to find out whether you are ready for your Functional Skills Level 2 English exam. But the result is only useful if you know how to read it.

Here is how we look at a mock result, and what we suggest next.

Why take a mock at all

Our English mock test is £35. The real exam is £160. If you are not ready, it is far better to find that out for £35 than for £160.

The mock is set with Highfield, the exam board we use, and it comes with full marking and feedback. So you do not just get a score. You find out where the marks went.

If you passed comfortably

Book your exam. Do not sit on a good result for months, because the skills are sharpest right now.

Exams need to be booked and paid for at least three days ahead to guarantee a session, so build that into your plan.

If you were close

Borderline results nearly always come down to a handful of specific things.

In writing, it is usually one of three: the wrong register for the audience, a missing content point from the task, or the wrong layout for the format asked for, such as an email, a letter or an article.

In reading, it is often answering the question you expected rather than the one on the page.

If you were a long way off

That is useful information too. It means you need more than a quick fix, and live teaching will get you there faster than working alone.

Should you take another mock?

Often, yes. Many learners take a second mock after a week or two of focused work, simply to check the gap has closed before they pay for the exam. It is the most reliable way to walk into the real thing knowing you are ready.
