If September has gone and you are now aiming at a January start, you have roughly sixteen weeks. That is enough. But only if you avoid one specific trap.
The date that catches people out
If you sit the GCSE English resit in the November 2026 series, your results are not released to you until 14 January 2027
Read that again if you are planning a January start.
Most January intakes want confirmation of your qualifications before enrolment, and many close applications well before mid-January. You could sit the exam, pass it comfortably, and still miss your start date because the certificate did not exist in time.
Why Functional Skills does not have this problem
There is no fixed exam window. You book your assessment when you are ready and your result follows shortly after, rather than being held until a national release date months later.
For anyone working to a January deadline, that single difference is usually decisive.
The timeline that works
✓ Now to mid-October. Confirm your course accepts Functional Skills Level 2. Email admissions and get it in writing.
✓ Mid-October. Book a mock test. It tells you honestly whether you need a five-day refresher or a full ten-week course, and it costs £35 rather than a wasted enrolment.
✓ Late October to November. Study. Five-day course if you are close, ten weeks if there is real ground to cover.
✓ Late November to early December. Sit the assessment.
✓ December. Certificate in hand, submit to admissions with weeks to spare.
✓ The last realistic start date for a comfortable January qualification is early December. After that it gets tight.
If you are already past that
It is still possible, but it stops being comfortable. Book the mock first so we can tell you honestly whether a January start is realistic, rather than selling you a course that will not land in time. If it is not, we will say so and help you plan for September 2027 instead.
