If you deferred your place to January because the English requirement was not in place for September, you have done the sensible thing. You have also given yourself a deadline.
From the start of October, there are roughly twelve weeks before most January intakes want your evidence. That is plenty, if you use it in the right order.
Weeks one and two: confirm, then measure
Before you study anything, get two answers.
✓ Does your course accept Functional Skills Level 2 English? Email admissions and ask in writing. Most degree routes do. Teacher training does not. Our guide to checking your course walks you through it.
✓ When exactly do they need your certificate? Ask for a date, not “before you start”.
Then find out where you are. A mock test costs £35 and tells you whether you need a short refresher or a full course.
Weeks three to ten: study

This is where most of the twelve weeks go, and how you use them depends on your mock result.
✓ If the mock shows you are close, the five-day revision course at £19.99 is designed for exactly that. You can finish it well before half term and book your exam early.
✓ If there is real ground to cover, the ten-week live course fits this window almost exactly. It runs in small online groups on Saturday mornings or Thursday lunchtimes, with a mock test included.
Weeks ten and eleven: sit the exam
Functional Skills has no fixed exam window, so you book your exam when you are ready rather than waiting for a national date. Aim to sit it by early December. That leaves room for your result to come through and, if you need it, a second attempt.
Week twelve: send it
Once you have your certificate, send it to admissions and ask them to confirm the condition is cleared. Keep the reply.
The trap to avoid

If you are thinking about a GCSE resit instead, check the dates first. Results for the November 2026 GCSE series are released on 14 January 2027. For most January starts, that is too late to count. We explain the full timeline in our January intake guide.
Twelve weeks is enough
It is not, however, a reason to wait. The students who struggle with a January start are usually the ones who begin in November.
Our five-day courses carry a 92% first-time pass rate.
