Physiotherapists help people move again after injury, surgery, illness or a long term condition. It is a registered health profession, and the National Careers Service puts the starting salary at around £32,000 a year, rising to around £48,000 with experience, for a typical week of 35 to 40 hours.
If you want to start a physiotherapy degree in 2027, the deadline is closer than it looks. The UCAS equal consideration deadline for most 2027 courses is 6pm on Wednesday 13th January 2027, about ten weeks from today. Almost every course page asks for English and maths at grade 4 (the old grade C), and many ask for science too. If you do not have those grades, this guide explains which universities and apprenticeships accept Functional Skills Level 2, the science trap that catches many applicants, and how to get qualified before you apply.
What does a physiotherapist do?
Physiotherapists assess and treat people of all ages with problems affecting movement, from sports injuries and back pain to recovery after a stroke or heart surgery. You might work in an NHS hospital, a community team, a GP surgery, a private clinic or with a sports club.
To practise in the UK you must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). That means completing an approved physiotherapy qualification first.
Two main ways into physiotherapy
A physiotherapy degree
Most physiotherapists qualify through a degree. The National Careers Service says you will usually need two or three A levels, or equivalent, with biology required for the degree route. Many adults and career changers apply with an Access to Higher Education Diploma instead. If you already have a degree in a related subject, such as sports science or biology, a postgraduate master’s is another route.
Places are competitive. Universities look closely at your personal statement and interview, and several advise you to get some physiotherapy work experience before you apply.
A physiotherapy degree apprenticeship
The Physiotherapist Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship lets you qualify while you work, often as a physiotherapy assistant or support worker. The National Careers Service says it usually takes about four years, though some universities run it in a shorter time. Entry rules vary:
- ✓ UWE Bristol, Physiotherapist Degree Apprenticeship: asks for grade C/4 in English, maths and double science “or equivalent” and states “we accept Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English”. You must work in a health or social care role for at least 30 hours a week and be sponsored by your employer.
- ✓ Sheffield Hallam University, Physiotherapy Degree Apprenticeship: asks for maths and English at Level 2. If you do not have them, the university says it will refer you to its Functional Skills training partner to complete them in your first year. You need at least six months of health and social care experience, and the course runs for 33 months plus a 3 month end point assessment.
Which physiotherapy degrees accept Functional Skills Level 2?
Here is what current course pages say:
- ✓ Coventry University, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, September 2027: asks for GCSE maths, English and one science at grade 4/C “or Functional Skills Level 2, or other equivalent Level 2 awards”.
- ✓ Teesside University, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, 2026 to 2027 entry: asks for three GCSEs at grade 4 (C) including English language, maths and science, and says Functional Skills Level 2 “can be accepted in place of English and maths GCSE”.
- ✓ University of Essex, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, October 2027: accepts Ofqual regulated Level 2 qualifications, including Functional Skills Level 2, in place of GCSE maths. Functional Skills Level 2 English is accepted in place of GCSE English if you do not need a Student visa and English is your first language or you have lived in the UK for more than three years.
- ✗ University of Plymouth, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, 2027 entry: says it will consider Functional Skills Level 2 in maths, but gives preference to applicants who already hold GCSE grades when they apply.
- ✗ University of Cumbria, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy: lists GCSE English language, maths and biology (or combined science) at C/4 and does not mention Functional Skills as an alternative.
The science trap: four things to check before you apply
Each university sets its own rules, so check these four things on every course page on your shortlist:
- ✓ Science usually needs a GCSE. Functional Skills covers English and maths only. Coventry, Teesside, Essex and Cumbria all ask for GCSE science at grade 4/C as well, and Essex lists no Functional Skills alternative for science. If you do not have it, plan for it now.
- ✓ English and maths can be treated differently. Plymouth mentions Functional Skills for maths only. If a page only mentions one subject, email and ask about the other.
- ✓ Access to HE units may not be enough. Essex says an Access diploma must be supported by Level 2 maths, science and English if those units were not part of the diploma. Coventry asks Access applicants for GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C as well.
- ✓ Biology matters at Level 3. Most degree pages ask for biology, human biology or PE at A level, or relevant science credits in an Access course.
If anything is unclear, email the admissions team and ask: “Do you accept Functional Skills Level 2 English and maths in place of GCSE for BSc Physiotherapy?” Our guide to whether universities accept Functional Skills Level 2 goes into more detail, and our guide to Functional Skills Level 2 English or a GCSE equivalency test explains how to choose when a course lists both.
Is there funding for physiotherapy students?
In England, physiotherapy is one of the allied health courses covered by the NHS Learning Support Fund, run by the NHS Business Services Authority. Eligible students can receive a Training Grant of £5,000 per academic year, which is not means tested and does not need to be paid back. There is also Parental Support of £2,000 per academic year if you have parental responsibility for a child under 15, or under 17 if the child has special educational needs, plus help with some placement travel and accommodation costs. Check the NHSBSA guidance for the full eligibility rules.
Why the Ofqual regulated part matters
Not every online “Level 2” certificate is a regulated qualification. Essex, for example, asks specifically for Ofqual regulated Level 2 qualifications. A short course certificate will not do.
At Functify Learning, your Functional Skills Level 2 English and maths qualifications are awarded by Highfield and regulated by Ofqual, and we are a Highfield Approved Centre. Functify is part of Geek School Tutoring, which has taught more than 1,000 students since 2013.

Functional Skills Level 2 for physiotherapy: frequently asked questions
Can I become a physiotherapist with Functional Skills instead of GCSEs?
Often, yes, for English and maths. Coventry, Teesside and Essex list Functional Skills Level 2 as an accepted alternative for their physiotherapy degrees. You will still need A levels, an Access course or another Level 3 qualification, and usually GCSE science.

No. Functional Skills covers English and maths, not science. Most physiotherapy degrees, including Coventry, Teesside, Essex and Cumbria, ask for GCSE science at grade 4/C as well.
Do all physiotherapy degrees accept Functional Skills Level 2?
No. The University of Cumbria does not list Functional Skills as an alternative, and Plymouth mentions it for maths only and prefers GCSE grades. Always check the course page for each university you apply to.
Can I do a physiotherapy degree apprenticeship with Functional Skills?
Some programmes accept it. UWE Bristol accepts Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English for its Physiotherapist Degree Apprenticeship. You also need an employer, and employers can set their own requirements.
