Dental nursing is one of the quickest routes into a healthcare career. You can start as a trainee in a dental practice, earn while you learn, and register with the General Dental Council (GDC) once you qualify. For parents returning to work, career changers and school leavers, it is a popular and practical choice.
Then you read the entry requirements and see one line: Level 2 English and maths. If you left school without a grade 4 (the old grade C) in GCSE English or maths, that line can stop you before you start.
This year there is a second reason to act quickly. From 1st June 2026, the GDC shortened the time trainee dental nurses have to start formal training. This guide explains what dental nursing providers ask for in English and maths, where Functional Skills Level 2 fits, what the new GDC rule means for you, and how to use the October half term to get your English and maths sorted before the new year.
What English and maths do dental nursing courses ask for?
Requirements vary by provider and by route, so it is worth looking at real examples. Here is what four current course pages say:
- ✓ University of Leeds, National Diploma for Dental Nurses (18 months, part time): a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade C or above in English Language and maths, plus a pre-enrolment literacy and numeracy assessment.
- ✓ Presidency London College, Dental Nursing Apprenticeship: 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher including English and maths, or a relevant Level 2 vocational qualification and the ability to show English and maths at Level 2 or above. Applicants who do not meet the Functional Skills requirements can complete them alongside the apprenticeship.
- ✓ Blackburn College, Dental Nursing Apprenticeship Level 3: a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above in maths and English, with Functional Skills English and maths only needed if you cannot provide evidence of your GCSEs.
- ✓ University of Portsmouth, BSc (Hons) Advanced Dental Nursing Professional Practice (Top Up), 2026/27 entry: GCSE English and maths at grade C/4, and the page states that Functional Skills are acceptable in place of GCSEs.
The pattern is clear. GCSE is the default, many providers accept Functional Skills Level 2 or let you complete it during training, and a few ask for GCSEs only.
Is Functional Skills Level 2 accepted for dental nursing?
Often, but not always. Functional Skills Level 2 sits at Level 2 on the national qualifications framework, the same level as a GCSE at grade 4 or above. That is why many colleges, universities and employers list it alongside GCSEs.
It is a different qualification from a GCSE, though, and each provider sets its own rules. Before you book anything, check three things:
- ✓ Does the course or vacancy say “or equivalent”, or mention Functional Skills by name?
- ✓ Do you need the qualification before you enrol, or can you complete it during your training?
- ✓ Are they asking for English, maths or both?
If the page is not clear, email the admissions team and ask one simple question: “Do you accept Functional Skills Level 2 English and maths in place of GCSE?” Our guide to Functional Skills Level 2 English or a GCSE equivalency test explains how to check what your course will accept.
The new GDC deadline for trainee dental nurses
“Dental nurse” is a legally protected title. Only people registered with the GDC as dental nurses can use it, and to register you need to complete a GDC recognised qualification. Trainees can work in a practice while they train, but the GDC has tightened the timing.
If you start work as a trainee on or after 1st June 2026
You must begin a recognised training programme within 12 months of starting work. Before this change, trainees had two years.
If you were already working as a trainee before 1st June 2026
If you had not started training by 1st June 2026, you must start by 1st June 2027 or two years from the date you began work, whichever comes first. Trainees who started work between 1st June 2025 and 31st May 2026 must start training by 1st June 2027, even if their original two year deadline would have been later.
The GDC encourages trainees to enrol on a programme as soon as possible after starting work.
Why this matters for your English and maths
If your chosen course asks for Level 2 English and maths before you enrol, a missing certificate could push back your start date and eat into your 12 months. Getting your Functional Skills Level 2 now removes that risk.
Dental nurse apprenticeships and English and maths
The Level 3 dental nurse apprenticeship lets you earn a wage in a practice while you train, usually for 18 to 24 months. The English and maths rules for apprenticeships changed in 2025.
If you start the apprenticeship aged 16 to 18
English and maths are still part of the apprenticeship. If you do not already have them, you will study them alongside your training.
If you start the apprenticeship aged 19 or older
Since 11th February 2025, English and maths have been optional for apprentices who start aged 19 or older. You and your employer decide together whether to include them.
Optional for the apprenticeship does not always mean optional for the job. One apprentice dental nurse vacancy in Newmarket on the government’s Find an apprenticeship service lists GCSE English and maths at grade 4 as desirable, with Functional Skills “if required”. Having your certificate ready makes your application stronger. Our guide to Functional Skills Level 2 for apprenticeships explains the rules in more detail.
Why the Ofqual regulated part matters
Not every online “Level 2” certificate is a regulated qualification. If a college or university asks for an equivalent to GCSE, it will expect a regulated qualification, not a short course certificate.
At Functify Learning, your Functional Skills Level 2 English and maths qualifications are awarded by Highfield and regulated by Ofqual, and we are a Highfield Approved Centre.

Functional Skills Level 2 for dental nurses: frequently asked questions
Do I need GCSEs to become a dental nurse?
Not always. Many dental nursing courses and apprenticeships ask for GCSE English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above, and many also accept Functional Skills Level 2 or let you complete it during training. Each provider sets its own rules, so check the entry requirements for your course.
Is Functional Skills Level 2 the same as a GCSE?
It is at the same level, Level 2, as a GCSE at grade 4 or above, but it is a different qualification. That is why it matters whether a course says “or equivalent”. If you are unsure, ask the admissions team.
Can I work as a trainee dental nurse while I get my English and maths?
You can work as a trainee in a practice, but from 1st June 2026 new trainees must start a recognised training programme within 12 months of starting work. If your course asks for Level 2 English and maths before you enrol, sort them out early so you do not miss that deadline.
Do dental nurse apprentices need English and maths?
Apprentices who start aged 16 to 18 still study them. Since 11th February 2025, English and maths are optional for apprentices who start aged 19 or older, although your employer or training provider may still ask for them.
Can I sit Functional Skills Level 2 online from home?
Yes. You sit the exam online from home, and we help you set up your laptop, camera and connection beforehand.
How quickly can I get my certificate?
Your exam is booked within 5 days and your certificate usually arrives within 10 days of your result.
What if I only need maths, or only English?
You can book one subject on its own for £160. You do not need to sit both.
