Common mistakes on this topic
From our tutors’ marking and the most recent examiner reports – check your work against these:
- Treating decimal hours as minutes: 2.75 hours is 2 h 45 min, not 2 h 75 min.
- Losing a decimal place when multiplying (0.8 × 0.05 = 0.4 instead of 0.04). Count the places in the question.
- Writing money with one decimal place (£47.6). Always two.
How to use it
- Print the worksheet (or work on screen) and attempt every question without looking at the answers. Give yourself a rough time limit – Level 2 exams are tight.
- Mark your work against the answer page. For maths, check the method as well as the final number; method marks are where most of the marks are.
- Read the ‘common mistakes’ notes below and check whether any of them happened to you. Then redo the questions you got wrong a day later.

Frequently asked questions
How do you multiply two decimals without a calculator?
Ignore the decimal points and multiply the whole numbers, then count the total decimal places in the question and put that many back. 3.4 × 2.5: 34 × 25 = 850, two decimal places, so 8.50 = 8.5.
How do you divide by a decimal?
Multiply both numbers by 10, 100 or 1,000 until the divisor is a whole number, then divide as normal. 9.6 ÷ 0.3 becomes 96 ÷ 3 = 32.
How do you convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 2.75 hours: 0.75 × 60 = 45, so 2 hours 45 minutes. Going the other way, divide the minutes by 60.
