A plan is the view from above; an elevation is the view from the front or side. Level 2 questions give you a 3D shape made of cubes, or a simple building, and ask you to draw or identify the views – then sometimes to read measurements off an architect’s plan. Common mistakes on this topic
From our tutors’ marking and the most recent examiner reports – check your work against these:
- Drawing the view in 3D – a plan or elevation is flat; no slanted lines.
- Drawing the side elevation from the left when the question says the right (they are mirror images).
- Forgetting hidden cubes: a cube behind another still adds to the plan view.
How to use it
- Print the worksheet (or work on screen) and attempt every question without looking at the answers. Give yourself a rough time limit – Level 2 exams are tight.
- Mark your work against the answer page. For maths, check the method as well as the final number; method marks are where most of the marks are.
- Read the ‘common mistakes’ notes below and check whether any of them happened to you. Then redo the questions you got wrong a day later.

What is the difference between a plan and an elevation?
A plan is the view from directly above. An elevation is a view from the side – the front elevation from the front, the side elevation from the left or right. All of them are flat, 2D drawings.
How do you draw the plan view of a solid made from cubes?
Imagine looking straight down. Draw one square for every column of cubes, however tall the column is. The plan shows only where cubes are, not how high they go.
How do I check my plan and elevations agree?
The plan and front elevation must be the same width; the plan and side elevation must be the same depth; the two elevations must be the same height. If one of those fails, one drawing is wrong.
