Fractions at Level 2 mean finding a fraction of an amount, comparing fractions with different denominators, and adding or subtracting them inside a problem about time, stock or pay. This free worksheet covers all of those, calculator-free, with the working shown for every answer.
Free to download, print and share for personal or classroom use. Answers included.
What’s in this worksheet
- Section A โ Fraction of an amount (9 marks)
- Section B โ Equivalence and comparing (11 marks)
- Section C โ Adding, subtracting and mixed numbers (13 marks)
- Revise box with the rules and methods for the topic
- Worked answers for every question
Common mistakes on this topic
From our tutors’ marking and the most recent examiner reports โ check your work against these:
- Adding numerators and denominators separately (ยฒโโ + ยนโโ = ยณโโ). Find a common denominator first.
- Finding the fraction that was asked about instead of the one the question wants โ working out the part-time students when it asked for full-time.
- Not simplifying, or leaving an answer as ยนยนโโ hours when the question asks for hours and minutes.
How to use it
- Print the worksheet (or work on screen) and attempt every question without looking at the answers. Give yourself a rough time limit โ Level 2 exams are tight.
- Mark your work against the answer page. For maths, check the method as well as the final number; method marks are where most of the marks are.
- Read the ‘common mistakes’ notes below and check whether any of them happened to you. Then redo the questions you got wrong a day later.

Frequently asked questions
How do you find a fraction of an amount?
Divide by the denominator (bottom number) and multiply by the numerator (top). Three-fifths of ยฃ240 is 240 รท 5 = 48, then 48 ร 3 = ยฃ144.
How do you compare two fractions with different denominators?
Convert them to the same denominator โ or, if a calculator is allowed, turn each into a decimal by dividing top by bottom. 18/30 = 0.6 and 25/40 = 0.625, so 25/40 is bigger.
Do I need to add fractions in the Functional Skills exam?
Occasionally, and usually inside a context such as fractions of a tin of paint used on two days, or hours worked as mixed numbers. Find a common denominator, add the tops, and simplify.
