When can I book my Functional Skills Level 2 exam?

You can book your exam from five days after enrolment on any Functify course. This is a Highfield rule – the five-day window allows time for your account to be set up with the exam board and for you to complete pre-exam admin.

You do not need to wait until you finish your course to book. Many learners book the exam at the start to create a deadline that focuses their study. If you decide you need more time, you can reschedule.

Step-by-step: how to book your exam

Step 1 – Decide if you are ready

Before booking the real exam, sit a Highfield-marked mock test. Our Mock Test costs £35 and uses the actual exam platform. If you score above 60%, you are ready. If not, do another week of revision and re-test before booking the real thing.

Step 2 – Choose your subject and exam date

Go to the Functify exam booking page. You can book Maths only, English only, or both together. Exams are available throughout the week and on Saturdays – choose a slot that fits your schedule.

Step 3 – Pay (Klarna available)

Single subject exam booking is £125. Both subjects together is £250. Klarna is at checkout – spread the cost over 3 or 4 interest-free payments if you want to.

Step 4 – Receive your booking confirmation

Within 24 hours you will get an email from Highfield with your exam date, time, joining link and pre-exam checklist. Read this carefully – it tells you exactly what is allowed in the room with you.

Step 5 – Set up your room and tech

The day before your exam:

  • Test your webcam, microphone and internet speed (minimum 5Mbps)
  • Choose a quiet room with no other people in it
  • Clear your desk – only allowed items: pen, paper, calculator (Maths only)
  • Charge your laptop or have it plugged in
  • Have photo ID ready (passport or driving licence)

Step 6 – Sit the exam

Log in 15 minutes before your slot. The invigilator will check your ID, scan your room via webcam, and start you on the exam. Maths is 2 hours. English Reading is 1 hour. English Writing is 1 hour. You can take all three in one sitting if you want to.

Step 7 – Wait for results

Results are usually issued within 5-10 working days. You receive an email with your pass/fail outcome. If you pass, your physical certificate from Highfield is posted to you within 2-3 weeks.

What to do in the week before your exam

The five days before your exam matter more than the previous five weeks. Use them well:

  • Day 1-2: Sit one full past paper under timed conditions. Mark it. Identify your two weakest topics.
  • Day 3-4: Drill those two topics specifically. Watch the relevant revision videos again. Do 10-15 questions on each.
  • Day 5 (day before): Light revision only. Re-read your notes. Do not learn anything new. Set up your tech and your room.
  • Exam morning: Eat properly. Arrive at your desk 20 minutes early. Take a deep breath.

What if I fail?

You can rebook the exam without redoing the course. Most learners who fail first time pass on the second attempt because they now know exactly what the exam looks like. The exam fee is payable again, but you will not need to repurchase the course.

That said, our learners pass at 92% first time – so the odds are strongly in your favour if you have completed a Functify course and sat a mock test first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sit the exam at home or do I have to go to a test centre?

At home. All Highfield Functional Skills exams are delivered online via remote invigilation. You sit from your own desk, with a webcam-monitored invigilator.

How much does the exam cost?

£125 per subject, or £250 for both Maths and English booked together. The Complete Package at £450 includes both exams plus all the courses.

Can I book and sit the exam in the same week?

You need to wait five days from enrolment. So if you enrol on a Monday, the earliest you can sit the exam is the following Saturday.

What ID do I need?

Photo ID – passport, UK driving licence, or national ID card. Highfield will check this on webcam at the start of the exam.

What happens if my internet drops mid-exam?

Highfield’s system pauses the exam. You can reconnect within a set time window and resume. The invigilator handles the technical side.

Can I use a calculator?

Yes – in the calculator section of the Maths exam (which is 75% of marks). The non-calculator section is 25% of marks. No calculator is needed for English.

Is the exam the same difficulty as GCSE?

It is the same level (equivalent to GCSE grade 4) but the format is different – more applied, less academic. Most learners find it more accessible than GCSE.

The bottom line

Booking your Functional Skills Level 2 exam takes ten minutes. Sitting it takes 2-3 hours. Getting your certificate takes 2-3 weeks. The whole process from enrolment to certificate can easily be done in under a month – significantly faster than the academic year a college GCSE would take.
