Common mistakes on this topic

- Typing 3 h 30 min as 3.3 hours. Convert minutes to a fraction of an hour: 30 ÷ 60 = 0.5.
- Turning 2.4 hours into 2 h 40 min. The 0.4 is a fraction of an hour: 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes.
- Averaging the speeds of two legs instead of using total distance ÷ total time.

Frequently asked questions
What is the formula for speed?
Speed = distance ÷ time. Rearranged: distance = speed × time, and time = distance ÷ speed. Most students remember it with the triangle – D on top, S and T on the bottom.
How do you convert minutes into hours for a speed calculation?
Divide the minutes by 60. 20 minutes is 20 ÷ 60 = 0.333 hours, so 1 hour 20 minutes is 1.333 hours – not 1.2. Going back, multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes.
How do you find average speed for a journey in two parts?
Add the distances, add the times, then divide total distance by total time. Averaging the two speeds gives the wrong answer unless both parts took exactly the same time.
