Common mistakes on this topic
From our tutors’ marking and the most recent examiner reports – check your work against these:
- Rounding the wrong way: 4.04 coaches → 4 coaches leaves 2 people behind. If people or things must all fit, round up.
- Stopping at the division: ‘19.75’ is not an answer to ‘how many tables’.
- Place-value slips with decimals – 2.7 × 1.8 = 48.6 instead of 4.86. Count the decimal places in the question and match them in the answer.
How to use it
- Print the worksheet (or work on screen) and attempt every question without looking at the answers. Give yourself a rough time limit – Level 2 exams are tight.
- Mark your work against the answer page. For maths, check the method as well as the final number; method marks are where most of the marks are.
- Read the ‘common mistakes’ notes below and check whether any of them happened to you. Then redo the questions you got wrong a day later.

Frequently asked questions
When do I round up and when do I round down in a division question?
Ask what the number represents. If everyone or everything has to fit (coaches, boxes to hold all items, tins of paint), round up. If the question asks how many complete or full things you can make (full bags, whole tables you can pay for), round down and state the remainder if asked.
Do I need to know long multiplication for Level 2?
Yes – the non-calculator section can include multiplication of a three-digit by a two-digit number, and division by a two-digit number. Any correct written method (column, grid, chunking) earns the marks.
How do I multiply decimals without a calculator?
Ignore the decimal points, multiply the whole numbers, then put back the total number of decimal places from the question. 2.7 × 1.8: 27 × 18 = 486, two decimal places in total, so 4.86.
