Common mistakes on this topic

- Comparing 500 ml with 1.2 litres without converting to the same unit.
- Working out what an offer saves in theory instead of what the shopper actually pays for what they need.
- Listing unit prices but never writing the conclusion – the final mark is for the decision.
How to use it
- Print the worksheet (or work on screen) and attempt every question without looking at the answers. Give yourself a rough time limit – Level 2 exams are tight.
- Mark your work against the answer page. For maths, check the method as well as the final number; method marks are where most of the marks are.
- Read the ‘common mistakes’ notes below and check whether any of them happened to you. Then redo the questions you got wrong a day later.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to compare best buys?
Work out the price per unit (per 100 g, per litre, per item) for each option, in the same units, and pick the lowest. Write the unit prices down – they earn method marks even if you then pick the wrong one.
How do you compare a percentage discount with a multi-buy offer?
Work out the actual amount paid for the number of items the person needs under each offer. ‘3 for 2’ on three £24 shirts is £48; ‘25% off’ is £54. Never compare the offers in the abstract.
Do I have to show working for best-buy questions?
Yes – typically one mark for each unit price and one for the conclusion. A correct answer with no working can score only the final mark.
