Organisational Features – Basic Multiple-Choice Worksheet – Functional Skills English Level 2

Before you can explain why a writer used a table or a subheading, you have to be able to spot one and name it. This free multiple-choice worksheet uses a realistic leaflet packed with organisational features and asks 26 quick questions – identify the feature, say what it is for, match features to purposes. It is the warm-up for the exam-style sheet.

Common mistakes on this topic

From our tutors’ marking and the most recent examiner reports – check your work against these:

  • Mixing up organisational features with language features. If the question says ‘organisational’ or ‘presentational’, do not answer ‘rhetorical question’.
  • Giving a generic purpose – ‘it makes it easier to read’ – instead of what the feature does for the reader of this text.
  • Calling everything a ‘heading’. Learn the difference between the main heading, subheadings, captions and pull quotes.

How to use it

  1. Do the basic multiple-choice sheet first, without notes, and mark it. Anything under 80% – reread the Remember box and redo the ones you got wrong.
  2. Then do the exam-style sheet with a time limit: about a minute per mark.
  3. Mark it using the mark scheme exactly as written – no half marks for vague answers – and note which question types cost you.

Frequently asked questions

What are organisational features in Functional Skills English?

The layout devices a writer uses to organise information on the page: headings, subheadings, bullet points, numbered lists, tables, columns, bold text, text boxes, captions, images, logos, hyperlinks, contents pages, glossaries and keys.

What is the difference between organisational and language features?

Organisational features are about layout – how the text is arranged. Language features are about word choice – rhetorical questions, emotive language, statistics, direct address. Exam questions ask for one or the other, and answers from the wrong category score zero.

How are organisational features tested in the Level 2 reading exam?

Typically one or two marks: ‘Which organisational feature helps the reader find the cost quickly?’, ‘Match each subheading to the correct paragraph’, or ‘Identify one organisational feature and explain how it helps the reader.’
