Few people matter more on someone’s worst day than the crew who arrive in the ambulance. If you want to become a paramedic, or start with an ambulance service in a support role and work your way up, you have probably already read the entry requirements and spotted the same line on almost every page: Level 2 English and maths.
If you left school without a grade 4 (the old grade C) in GCSE English or maths, that line can feel like a closed door. It does not have to be. This guide explains what paramedic degrees, degree apprenticeships and ambulance service jobs ask for in English and maths, where Functional Skills Level 2 fits, and how to use the October half term to get your certificate in place before the UCAS deadline of 6pm on Wednesday 13th January 2027.
The main routes into paramedic work
To work as a paramedic in the UK you must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). According to the NHS Health Careers service, there are three main ways to get there.
A paramedic science degree
This is still the most common route. Courses usually last three years full time, and each university sets its own entry requirements, so you need to check each one carefully.
A paramedic degree apprenticeship
You apply for an apprentice position with an ambulance service trust and study for your degree while you work. Health Careers notes that numbers are currently small and you are likely to need relevant experience.
A student paramedic role
A few ambulance trusts offer this route, and entry is very competitive.
Many people also start in a support role first, such as ambulance support worker or assistant ambulance practitioner, and build experience before moving on to paramedic training. These roles have English and maths requirements too.
What English and maths do paramedic courses and ambulance jobs ask for?
Requirements vary, so it helps to look at real examples. Here is what current course pages and job information say:
- ✓ Keele University, Paramedic Science with Integrated Masters (2027 entry, four years): maths at grade 4/C in GCSE or Level 2 Functional Skills Maths. Keele says most students meet the English requirement through a grade 4/C in GCSE English, and its foundation year route accepts Level 2 Functional Skills English or maths in place of GCSE.
- ✓ UWE Bristol, BSc Paramedic Science (2027/28 entry, three years): GCSE grade C/4 or above in English, maths and science, “or equivalent”. The page does not mention Functional Skills by name.
- ✓ University of Staffordshire, Paramedic Degree Apprenticeship Level 6 (three years): Level 2 maths and English through “GCSE, functional skills or equivalent”, or you can show ability at Level 2 through the university’s own initial assessment.
- ✓ London Ambulance Service, Assistant Ambulance Practitioner: Functional Skills Level 2 is listed alongside GCSE grades 4 to 7 as an accepted qualification, and you must hold it when you apply.
- ✓ Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Ambulance Support Worker (Apprenticeship), advertised in 2026: three GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including maths and English, or equivalent Functional Skills Level 2.
- ✓ Sandwell College, Access to HE Diploma (Paramedic): GCSE English and maths at grade 4 or above, or Level 2 Functional Skills as the equivalent.
The pattern is clear. GCSE is the default, most ambulance services and apprenticeship providers accept Functional Skills Level 2, and universities differ, so you must check the exact course you want.
Is Functional Skills Level 2 accepted for paramedic degrees?
Often, but not always. Functional Skills Level 2 sits at Level 2 on the national qualifications framework, the same level as a GCSE at grade 4 or above. That is why so many employers and course providers list it alongside GCSEs.
It is a different qualification from a GCSE, though, and each university sets its own rules. Before you apply, check three things:
- ✓ Does the course page mention Functional Skills by name, or say “or equivalent”?
- ✓ Is the requirement for English, maths or both? Some universities treat each subject differently.
- ✓ Does the course also ask for GCSE science? Functional Skills covers English and maths only, so if a course asks for science you will need to meet that separately.
If the page is not clear, email the admissions team and ask: “Do you accept Functional Skills Level 2 English and maths in place of GCSE for this course?” Our guide to Functional Skills Level 2 English or a GCSE equivalency test explains how to check what your course will accept.
Ambulance jobs: a way in while you build experience
If a degree feels like a big first step, a support role can get you working on the road sooner and gives you the experience that paramedic apprenticeships often look for.
Assistant ambulance practitioner
London Ambulance Service says applicants must be aged 18 or older, and no previous healthcare or medical experience is needed. You must already hold your English and maths qualifications to apply and enrol, and Functional Skills Level 2 is accepted.
Ambulance support worker apprenticeships
Trusts such as Yorkshire Ambulance Service have advertised ambulance support worker apprenticeships that accept Functional Skills Level 2 English and maths in place of GCSEs. Our guide to Functional Skills Level 2 for apprenticeships explains how English and maths rules work for apprentices.
Do not forget your driving licence
Many ambulance roles need more than a standard car licence. For its assistant ambulance practitioner role, London Ambulance Service asks for a full UK Category B licence with no more than three penalty points, plus a provisional or full C1 licence at the time you apply. Getting your English and maths certificate sorted early leaves you time to work on the licence too.
Why the Ofqual regulated part matters
Not every online “Level 2” certificate is a regulated qualification. When an NHS trust or university asks for an equivalent to GCSE, it expects a regulated qualification, not a short course certificate.
At Functify Learning, your Functional Skills Level 2 English and maths qualifications are awarded by Highfield and regulated by Ofqual, and we are a Highfield Approved Centre.
How long does it take to get Functional Skills Level 2?
That depends on where you are starting from.
- ✓ You feel confident: book the exam. With Functify Learning your exam is booked within 5 days and your certificate usually arrives within 10 days of your result.
- ✓ You are rusty: a 5 Day Revision Course from £19.99 gets you exam ready in about a week.
- ✓ You have been out of education for years or failed before: a live 10 Week Course from £197 per subject, in a small group of no more than 10 learners, with a mock exam included.

A half term plan before the UCAS deadline
For most schools in England, October half term runs from Monday 26th to Friday 30th October 2026. Whether you are a parent planning a career change or a young adult applying to university, that week is a good moment to start.
- This weekend: shortlist the paramedic courses, apprenticeships or ambulance jobs you want, and note exactly what each one asks for in English, maths and science.
- Before half term: take the free pass quiz for English and maths.
- Half term week: start a 5 Day Revision Course, or book a £35 mock exam per subject to find any gaps.
- Early November: book your exam and sit it online from home, with technical setup support beforehand.
- Before Christmas: have your certificate ready, so your application is complete well before the UCAS deadline of 6pm on Wednesday 13th January 2027 and you can apply for ambulance jobs advertised in the new year.
If you apply before your certificate arrives, list the exam as a pending qualification and ask the university whether it can be included as a condition of your offer.
How much will it cost?
At Functify Learning:
- ✓ English Level 2 exam: £160
- ✓ Maths Level 2 exam: £160
- ✓ English and maths together: £250, instead of £320 booked separately
- ✓ Mock exam: £35 per subject
