What is Functional Skills Level 2 English?
Functional Skills Level 2 English is a GCSE-equivalent English qualification, regulated by Ofqual and recognised nationally. A pass is accepted wherever GCSE English grade 4 (C) is required: by universities, employers, apprenticeship providers, the NHS and the armed forces.

What is on the Functional Skills Level 2 English exam?
The qualification is assessed in three separate components. Reading and Writing are sat online from home with Highfield:
Reading (1 hour): You will read 2-3 texts and answer questions on them. Expect to identify explicit and implicit information, work out purpose and audience, distinguish fact from opinion, compare texts, and summarise.
Writing (1 hour): Two writing tasks in different formats (letter, report, article, email) at specific word counts. Assessed on content, organisation, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and appropriate formality.
Speaking, Listening and Communicating: Separately assessed via a recorded presentation or formal discussion. As an Approved Centre we assess this component ourselves.
Each component must be passed. Overall outcome is pass/fail.
How long does Functional Skills Level 2 English take?
A fraction of the time a college GCSE resit takes. If you already read and write confidently, the 5-Day Course can get you ready in under a week. If you want proper teaching, the 10-Week Course is the fuller route – still only 10 weeks, not an academic year. You can book your exam from five days after enrolment.
