Free Functional Skills English Level 2 Worksheets and Writing Frames

The Functional Skills English Level 2 qualification has three parts: a Reading exam, a Writing exam and a Speaking, Listening and Communicating assessment. The Reading paper tests whether you can skim and scan several texts, identify language and organisational features, tell fact from opinion and compare sources. The Writing paper gives you two tasks – typically a formal letter or email plus an article, report, review or forum post – each worth around 27 marks, with roughly a third of those for spelling, punctuation and grammar.

The fastest way to improve is to pair a skills worksheet with a writing frame: work through persuasive techniques, then use them in the formal letter frame; fix your homophones, then check your model-answer comparison for them. Every resource below is free, has answers or a full model answer, and needs no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Level 2 writing exam marked?

Each task is typically worth 27 marks split roughly in thirds: spelling, punctuation and grammar; communication (clear, detailed, relevant ideas for the purpose and audience); and form and structure (correct layout, paragraphs, logical order, appropriate tone).

How long should my answers be?

Follow the suggested word count on each task – usually 200–250 or 250–300 words. Going well under it loses marks in every strand.

Do I need to use formal language in a forum post?

Semi-formal. Contractions are fine; slang, text-speak and emojis are not. Paragraphs, capital letters and full stops are marked exactly as they are in a letter.
